Uninstalling CartSync Pro and your data
What stops when you uninstall CartSync Pro, what stays in Shopify (saved carts on customer records, draft orders, the free gifts discount), what to do first, what CartSync Pro deletes from its own database and when, and reinstalling.
CartSync Pro keeps each signed-in customer's current cart on their customer record in Shopify, and a history of it in its own database. Uninstall it and carts stop syncing between devices straight away. The saved carts stay on your customers in Shopify; the history is deleted 48 hours later.
This page covers what changes, what to do first, and what's left afterwards.
What stops
- Cart sync. When you uninstall, Shopify removes the Cart Sync app embed from your theme: Shopify's docs say an app's blocks are "automatically and entirely removed from online store themes" (theme app extensions). Carts are no longer saved or restored. Each customer's cart stays in the browser of the device they used, as it does on any Shopify store.
- The restore notice. It was part of the embed.
- Cart Helper and the Customer's Active Cart block. They go with the app, along with Create Customer Cart under More actions.
- Emptying the saved cart after an order. CartSync Pro no longer hears about new orders.
CartSync Pro never edits your theme's code, so there's nothing to clean up in the theme.
What stays in Shopify
- Saved carts. Each customer's cart is in a metafield on their record, custom.custom_cart. It's in your store's own
customnamespace, so Shopify keeps it after an uninstall and CartSync Pro doesn't delete it. It holds variant IDs, quantities and when the cart was saved. Nothing reads it any more. - Draft orders created in Cart Helper. They're ordinary Shopify draft orders, tagged CartSync Pro. Free gifts on them keep their 100% line discount, so open invoices still work.
- Orders. Nothing CartSync Pro did changes your orders.
- The CartSync Pro free gifts discount, if your team ever gave a gift. See below.
Free gifts after uninstalling
Gifts are made free at checkout by CartSync Pro's discount function, through the automatic discount CartSync Pro free gifts in Discounts. Shopify doesn't document what happens to an app's discounts when the app is uninstalled, and we haven't confirmed it.
Plan for gifts not being free afterwards:
- A gift already in a customer's cart stays there, at full price.
- A gift your team saved that hasn't reached the customer's cart yet won't arrive: nothing puts it there any more.
Before you uninstall
- Settle open gifts. The home page's Free gifts and draft orders card shows how many gifts are Still open. For each customer your team gave one to, open Cart Helper and either remove the gift, or create a draft order from their cart, where the gift stays free.
- Tell your support team. After uninstalling they can't see customers' carts in the admin any more.
- Keep what you need from Insights. The numbers on the home page aren't available once the app is gone. Note the ones you want to keep.
- Export cart history you need. There's no export. If you need a customer's history (for a dispute, say), email support@ftwelvelabs.com before you uninstall.
Uninstall
- In your Shopify admin, go to Settings → Apps.
- Next to CartSync Pro, click the menu button, then Uninstall.
- Optionally choose a reason, and click Uninstall.
These are Shopify's steps; see Uninstalling apps. CartSync Pro is free, so there's no charge to cancel.
After you uninstall
Check Discounts. In Discounts, look for CartSync Pro free gifts. If it's still there, delete it.
Delete the saved carts, if you want. The custom.custom_cart metafield stays on each customer who had a saved cart. CartSync Pro doesn't create a metafield definition for it, so Shopify lists it as an unstructured metafield. To delete it from every customer at once:
- Go to Settings → Metafields and metaobjects → Customers, and click View unstructured metafields (under More actions if you see that).
- Next to custom.custom_cart, click Add definition. Give it a name, choose the JSON type, and save the definition.
- Open the new definition, click Delete, and choose Delete field and its saved values.
These are Shopify's steps, from Migrating metafields to a definition and Deleting metafields.
The draft orders tagged CartSync Pro are yours to keep or delete like any draft.
What CartSync Pro deletes
CartSync Pro's database is on F12 Labs' servers. Cart history and restore lists what it stores for each version of a cart.
| When | What's deleted |
|---|---|
| When you uninstall | Your store's login sessions, so CartSync Pro can no longer reach your store |
| 48 hours after you uninstall, when Shopify asks apps to erase a store's data | Cart history (every saved version of every cart), the store's name, country and time zone, and the names of staff who saved carts in Cart Helper |
| When you erase a customer's personal data in Shopify (while CartSync Pro is installed) | That customer's cart history |
Shopify sends the store request "48 hours after a store owner uninstalls your app", and a customer request 10 days after you ask Shopify to erase that customer (privacy law compliance).
Nothing in Shopify is deleted by CartSync Pro when you uninstall.
Reinstalling
The saved carts are still on your customers, so reinstalling picks them up:
- Install CartSync Pro again.
- Turn the Cart Sync app embed back on from the home page, as in Getting started.
- Add and pin the Customer's Active Cart block again if it's gone. See The customer's cart on their Shopify admin page.
Customers' saved carts sync again from their next visit. Cart history from before is gone if more than 48 hours passed, so Cart Helper starts a new history from the next save.
The next time your team gives a free gift, CartSync Pro uses the CartSync Pro free gifts discount if it's still in Discounts, or creates it again if you deleted it.
