Order discounts

Take a percentage or a fixed amount off the whole order with Discountly. A worked example of $15 off orders over $100, how the products you choose decide when it applies, spend tiers, the display message and a free shipping add-on.

An Order discount takes a percentage or an amount off the order subtotal: $15 off orders over $100, 10% off any order with a gift set in it, 5% off for members. The customer gets one discount on the order, not a discount on each item.

This page covers what's specific to order discounts. Creating a discount covers what every type shares.

Worked example: $15 off orders over $100

Every customer gets $15 off when their cart reaches $100.

  1. On the Discounts page, click Create discount and choose Order discount.
  2. Title: "$15 off orders over $100". Customers see it in the cart and at checkout. Leave the method on Automatic discount.
  3. Under Discount logic, click Add logic. In The offer, set Discount type to $ off and Value to 15.
  4. In Who it applies to, keep All products. Click Save to close the logic block.
  5. Under Minimum purchase requirements, choose Minimum purchase amount ($) and enter 100.
  6. Under Combinations, untick the types this offer shouldn't stack with. If your product discounts already take a lot off, you may want to untick Product discounts.
  7. Click Save rule.

What the customer pays:

Cart subtotal Discount Customer pays
$80.00 None, below $100 $80.00
$100.00 $15 off $85.00
$240.00 $15 off $225.00

The $15 comes off once, however big the order. For a discount that grows with the order, use % off: 10% off takes $10 off $100 and $24 off $240.

The offer

Field Choices
Discount type % off or $ off
Value The percentage or amount. More than 0

% off takes the percentage off the subtotal. $ off takes the amount off the order once. That's the difference from a Product discount, where $5 off comes off every matching item.

Which products it applies to

Who it applies to decides whether the cart qualifies, not what the discount comes off. The discount applies when the cart has at least one matching item, and then comes off the whole subtotal.

Example: 10% off any order that includes a gift set. Set % off 10 and, in Who it applies to, choose Specific products with Collection is in any of "Gift sets". A cart with a $40 gift set and $60 of other products gets 10% off $100: $10.

Exclusions work the same way. An excluded product doesn't make the cart qualify, but if something else does, the excluded product is still part of the subtotal the discount comes off. To take a percentage off some products only, use a Product discount instead.

More than one logic block

A discount can have several logic blocks, each with its own products and value: 10% off orders with a hoodie, 15% off orders with a jacket. When the cart matches more than one block, the block that takes the most off applies. They don't add up: a cart with a hoodie and a jacket gets 15% off.

Spend tiers

The minimum purchase amount belongs to the whole discount, not to a logic block. For tiers such as "$10 off over $100, $25 off over $200", create one order discount per tier:

  1. "$10 off over $100": $ off 10, Minimum purchase amount ($) 100.
  2. "$25 off over $200": $ off 25, Minimum purchase amount ($) 200.
  3. In both, under Combinations, untick Order discounts.

A $250 cart qualifies for both. Because they can't combine, Shopify gives the customer the better one: "the best discount for the customer's cart is always applied" (Discount combinations). The customer gets $25 off.

Minimum purchase requirements

Option The discount applies when
No minimum requirements (default) The cart has a matching item
Minimum purchase amount ($) The cart subtotal reaches the amount. The whole cart counts
Minimum quantity of items The cart has at least this many matching items. Only items that match the logic count

Display message

Customers see a message with the discount at checkout. By default it's the amount: 10% off or $15 off.

Tick Customize the display message to write your own Display message. {amount} becomes the discount, such as 10% or $15: "Spend $100, save {amount}". The Preview shows the result.

Free shipping add-on

Tick Also include a shipping discount with this rule to give free or reduced shipping under the same conditions, for example "$15 off and free shipping over $100". It works as on product discounts. For free shipping on its own, use a Shipping discount.

On the product page and in the cart

Order discounts don't appear in the Available offers block, even with Include in available offers section on the Product Page ticked. They depend on the whole cart, not on one product.

To tell shoppers how close they are, use the cart embed's upsell hints (Pro plan): a progress bar in the cart showing how much more to spend. Order discounts show hints when they have a minimum purchase requirement.

Troubleshooting

The discount doesn't apply. Check that the cart reaches the minimum, and that it has at least one item the logic matches. Click the eye icon on the logic block to see the products it matches. Check the customer is eligible: tag-based discounts need the customer signed in.

Two spend tiers applied to the same order. Untick Order discounts under Combinations in both, so Shopify applies only the better one.

The discount came off products I excluded. That's expected: exclusions decide whether the cart qualifies, and the discount comes off the whole subtotal. See Which products it applies to.
