Store setup and theme blocks
What each Discountly storefront piece does, when you need it, how to read the Store setup checklist, and how to add the cart embed, product page blocks and checkout extensions to your theme.
Discountly's discounts are calculated by Shopify at checkout, so they work without anything added to your theme. The storefront pieces are what show shoppers the deal before checkout, and in the case of free gifts, put the gift in the cart. This page covers each piece, how the Store setup checklist tracks them, and how to add them.
What Discountly adds to your storefront
| Store setup name | Name in the theme editor | Type | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cart embed | Discountly Cart Embed | App embed | Adds free gifts and Buy X get Y rewards to the cart automatically, storefront-wide |
| Volume pricing table | Volume Pricing Table | Product page block | Shows the quantity tiers and the price at each one next to Add to cart |
| Available offers | Product Page Discount | Product page block | Lists the offers a product qualifies for: volume, product discounts, free gifts and Buy X get Y |
| Mix & match | Mix & Match | Product page block | Explains that quantities combine across the products in a mix & match discount, with a link to shop them |
When you need each one
| Piece | Needed when you have a live… |
|---|---|
| Cart embed | Automatic Buy X get Y or Free gift with purchase discount. Without the embed, the reward isn't added to the cart |
| Volume pricing table | Volume pricing discount. The table appears on products an automatic volume discount applies to |
| Available offers | Discount with Include in available offers section on the Product Page turned on (in the discount's Advanced settings) |
| Mix & match | Volume discount with Combine quantities across all matching products turned on in an active logic block |
Every block hides itself on products where it has nothing to show, so it's safe to add them before you need them.
Reading the Store setup checklist
Store setup is at the bottom of the Discounts page. Under Online store it names your live theme and lists the four pieces. It reads your theme each time the Discounts page loads.
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| On | The piece is turned on, or placed on at least one product template |
| Needs attention | It's off, and at least one live discount depends on it |
| Not added | It's off, and no live discount needs it yet |
| Can't check | Discountly couldn't read your theme (see Troubleshooting) |
Under each piece, a line tells you why it matters:
- Needed by 2 live volume rules. It's off, and these discounts would use it.
- Used by 2 live volume rules. It's on, and these discounts use it.
- No live rule needs it yet. Nothing depends on it right now.
- On 1 of 3 product templates. For blocks: your theme has more than one product template, and the block is only on some of them (see More than one product template).
At the top, a summary line counts how many pieces are on, and whether any need attention.
Turning a piece on from the checklist
- Next to the piece, click Turn on (cart embed) or Add to product page (blocks).
- Your live theme opens in the theme editor with the piece ready: the embed switched on, or the block added to your default product template.
- For a block, drag it where you want it in the product information area, for example just above the quantity selector.
- Click Save in the theme editor.
- Go back to Discountly and reload the Discounts page. The piece now shows On.
Once a piece is on, its button changes to Open in theme editor, so you can change its settings.
Adding pieces by hand
If you'd rather work in the theme editor directly, open Online Store → Themes and click Customize on your live theme.
Cart embed
- In the left sidebar, open App embeds.
- Turn on Discountly Cart Embed.
- Click Save.
Product page blocks
- From the template menu at the top of the editor, open Products → Default product.
- In the product information section, click Add block and choose the Apps tab.
- Pick Volume Pricing Table, Product Page Discount or Mix & Match.
- Drag the block into place and click Save.
More than one product template
Some themes, or stores, use several product templates: one for gift cards, one for a featured range, and so on. Store setup checks every product template in your live theme. Add to product page only adds a block to the default one.
To cover the others, open each template from the template menu in the theme editor and add the block as described above. Store setup's line updates to show how many templates have it, for example On all 3 product templates.
Checking a theme before you publish it
Store setup only reads your published theme. If you're setting up a new theme before it goes live, add the pieces to it the same way in its theme editor, and check them in the theme preview. Store setup will show them once that theme is published.
Checkout extensions (Shopify Plus)
On Shopify Plus stores, Store setup also lists two checkout extensions under Checkout. On other plans the group is labelled Shopify Plus only.
| Extension | What it does | When you need it |
|---|---|---|
| Free-gift code field | Lets shoppers enter a gift code at checkout to add a free item | Buy X get Y or free gift discounts that use a discount code |
| Volume price display | Shows the volume-discounted unit price on each checkout line, with the original price struck through | Optional, for volume discounts |
Discountly can't read whether you've placed these, so they always show Not tracked. To add one:
- Click Open checkout editor in Store setup, or go to Settings → Checkout and click Customize.
- Add Discountly's block from the apps list. The free-gift code field goes in the order summary, under the cart lines. The volume price appears under each line item.
- Click Save.
The free-gift code field has three settings you can change in the checkout editor:
| Setting | Default |
|---|---|
| Toggle label | Have a code for a free gift offer (FG-XXXX)? |
| Code field label | Free item code |
| Help text | Enter your code to add your free item. Regular discount codes go in the Discount code field below. |
Troubleshooting
"Discountly can't read your theme yet." Discountly needs permission to read themes for Store setup. Accept the app's updated permissions when Shopify asks (or reinstall Discountly), then reload the page.
"Couldn't read your live theme." Something went wrong reading the theme. Reload the Discounts page to try again.
I saved in the theme editor but the status didn't change. Store setup reads the theme when the Discounts page loads. Reload it. Also check that you edited your live theme, not a draft.
The block is on, but nothing shows on the product page. Blocks only appear when there's something to show for that product:
- The volume pricing table needs a live automatic volume discount that includes the product.
- Available offers needs a live discount with the available offers option turned on that the product qualifies for.
- Mix & match needs a live volume discount with Combine quantities across all matching products turned on that includes the product.
A free gift isn't added to the cart. Check that the cart embed is On, that the discount is live and automatic, and that the cart meets the discount's minimum. If a shopper removed the gift themselves, it isn't added back. Add ?reset_free_rewards=1 to your store's URL to clear that.
