Shipping discounts
Give free or reduced shipping with Discountly. A worked example of free shipping over $75, percent and amount off shipping, minimum order subtotals, members-only shipping, combinations and the labels customers see at checkout.
A Shipping discount makes shipping free or cheaper at checkout: free shipping over $75, $5 off shipping for members, free shipping on any order with something from a collection. It's on every plan, and it needs nothing added to your theme.
This page covers what's specific to shipping discounts. Creating a discount covers what every type shares.
Worked example: free shipping over $75
Every customer gets free shipping when their cart reaches $75.
- On the Discounts page, click Create discount and choose Shipping discount.
- Title: "Free shipping over $75". Leave the method on Automatic discount.
- Under Discount logic, click Add logic. A shipping logic block only has Who it applies to: keep All products and click Save.
- Under Shipping, leave Shipping discount type on Free. In Minimum order subtotal for shipping discount, enter 75.
- Click Save rule.
What the customer pays for shipping:

The shipping discount
The Shipping box, below the logic, sets the discount:

The discount applies to every shipping rate the customer can choose at checkout, including faster, more expensive ones. Free makes them all free. Amount off takes the same amount off each rate.
At checkout, customers see Free shipping, % off shipping or Amount off shipping next to the shipping line.
Which products it needs
By default, any cart can get the discount, as long as it reaches the minimum. To give it only on orders with certain products, choose Specific products in the logic block's Who it applies to: for example Collection is in any of "Heavy items".
With specific products:
- The cart needs at least one of those products.
- Minimum order subtotal for shipping discount counts only those products. "Free shipping on $100 of seeds" needs $100 of seeds, not $100 of anything in a cart with one seed packet.
- The discount still applies to the whole shipment, not to some items' shipping.
A discount can have several logic blocks, each with its own products. A cart matching any of them qualifies.
Minimums and who gets it
Use Minimum order subtotal for shipping discount for "free shipping over $X": the cart embed's upsell hints (Pro plan) measure it, for bars such as "Add $12.00 more to get Free shipping".
Minimum purchase requirements works too, for example Minimum quantity of items for "free shipping on 3 or more candles". Only items the logic matches count toward a minimum quantity.
Eligibility limits the discount to some customers, as for every type. For "members always ship free", choose Customers with tags, enter member, and leave the minimum empty. Members have to be signed in.
Combinations
Shopify applies one shipping discount per order: "Multiple shipping discounts can't apply to the same order" (Discount combinations). So under Combinations, Shipping discounts is ticked off and locked. When a cart qualifies for several shipping discounts, Shopify applies the best one.
Product discounts and Order discounts are on by default, so free shipping also applies to carts with a volume, product or order discount. If you untick one, note that "Product and order discounts take priority over shipping discounts when they can't be combined": the customer keeps the product or order discount and pays for shipping.
Shipping discount or shipping add-on?
Any other type can include a shipping discount with Also include a shipping discount with this rule, under the same conditions as its own discount: "10% off for members, and free shipping". See Free shipping add-on.
Use a separate shipping discount when shipping has its own conditions, such as a different minimum, a different group of customers, or a different schedule.
On the product page
Shipping discounts don't appear in the Available offers block, even with Include in available offers section on the Product Page ticked. They depend on the whole cart. Use upsell hints in the cart instead.
Troubleshooting
Shipping isn't free at checkout. Check that the cart reaches Minimum order subtotal for shipping discount. With specific products, only those products count. Check the customer is eligible and signed in if the discount uses tags.
Shipping is free but the order discount disappeared, or the other way around. Check Combinations in both discounts. Without combining, Shopify keeps the product or order discount. See Combining discounts.
Customers get free express shipping. Free applies to every rate. Use Amount off with your standard rate's price instead. See The shipping discount.
