Uninstalling Aedify

What happens to your pages, blog posts, descriptions and templates when you uninstall Aedify, what to do before you uninstall, what Aedify leaves in your store and how to remove it, what data Aedify deletes, and reinstalling.

Everything you build with Aedify is saved in Shopify, not on Aedify's servers. Uninstall it and your pages, blog posts and descriptions stay, with their text, images and links. What stops is the part the app provides on your storefront: Aedify's styles and the live product, collection and blog post grids.

This page covers what changes, what to do first, and what's left in your store afterwards.

What stays

  • Pages and blog posts. They're regular Shopify pages and blog posts. The content Aedify saved stays in them, and you can edit them in Shopify's editor.
  • Product and collection descriptions. Saved into the product or collection, like any description.
  • Images. Images you uploaded in Aedify are in Content → Files, and so are the sample images that starter templates copied there (named aedify-sample-…).
  • Icons, videos and maps. Icons are saved into the page itself, and videos and maps are embedded from YouTube, Vimeo, your Files or Google Maps.
  • Templates. Your saved templates are Aedify template entries under Content → Metaobjects. Each page also keeps its own copy of the templates placed on it, as they were the last time the page was saved.
  • Inline styles. Colours, spacing, borders and font sizes you set under Style are saved with the element, so they keep working.

What changes on your storefront

When you uninstall, Shopify removes Aedify's theme app extension, the Aedify styles embed and the Aedify content block, from your theme. Aedify never edits your theme's code, so there's nothing else to clean up in the theme.

Without them, your content shows in your theme's plain styles:

Built with After uninstalling
Rows and columns Columns stack one under another, at every screen size. Row backgrounds and spacing set under Style stay
Banners The image shows, with the message and button under it instead of on top
Tabs Every panel shows, one after another, with the tab titles as a row of radio buttons above
Accordions Keep working: they're built on the browser's own open-and-close element, unstyled
Products, Collections, Blog posts Show nothing. They were filled in live by the Aedify content block
Elements set to Hide on storefront Show again. Hiding them was done by Aedify's styles
Buttons With the Theme button look (the default), keep your theme's button style. With Aedify button, show as plain links

Your theme also shows its own copy of the page text again: the Aedify content block hid it while it was on the template.

Before you uninstall

  1. Put your theme's Content block back. If you removed your theme's own Content block from the page or blog post template (as Getting started suggests for anchor links), add it back in the theme editor first. Otherwise, once the Aedify content block is gone, those pages show no text at all.
  2. Check hidden elements. Anything you set to Hide on storefront will show after uninstalling. Delete the ones you don't want shoppers to see, and save.
  3. Replace live grids you rely on. Pages with Products, Collections or Blog posts elements lose those grids. Add a featured collection section from your theme, or links, where you need them.
  4. Look at your important pages with tabs. Tab panels all show at once afterwards; if that reads badly, switch them to an accordion before you uninstall.

Uninstall

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Settings → Apps.
  2. Next to Aedify, click the menu button, then Uninstall.
  3. Optionally choose a reason, and click Uninstall.

These are Shopify's steps; see Uninstalling apps.

What Aedify leaves in your store

When you first opened Aedify, it added definitions to your store so it could keep track of what it built. They belong to your store and stay after you uninstall:

  • Metafields in the aedify namespace on pages, blog posts, products and collections: Aedify body hash, Aedify version, Aedify products and Aedify templates. They hold bookkeeping only. Your content doesn't depend on them.
  • Aedify template metaobjects: your saved templates.
  • Aedify revision metaobject definition. Aedify creates this definition but doesn't use it yet, so it's always empty. You may have noticed it under Content → Metaobjects while Aedify was installed.

If you won't reinstall, you can delete them under Settings → Custom data: the metafield definitions under each resource (Pages, Blog posts, Products, Collections), and the two metaobject definitions under Metaobjects. Deleting the Aedify template definition deletes your saved templates. Pages keep their own copies either way.

You can also delete the aedify-sample-… images from Content → Files if no page uses them.

What Aedify deletes

Aedify's own database holds only your login sessions and a log of saves (which page was saved, when, and its size). No customer data.

  • When you uninstall, Aedify deletes the login sessions.
  • 48 hours later, when Shopify asks apps to erase a store's data, Aedify deletes the rest, including the save log.

Nothing in Shopify is deleted by Aedify when you uninstall.

Reinstalling

Everything Aedify needs is still in your store, so reinstalling picks up where you left off: pages built in Aedify open in the builder as Aedify pages again, and your saved templates are back under Templates.

Run through Storefront setup on Aedify's home page again to turn the styles back on and re-add the content block to your templates, and to your product and collection templates if you used live elements in descriptions.

Shopify warns that after reinstalling an app, "your previous app settings or data might not be restored" (Uninstalling apps). Aedify keeps no settings of its own, and your content was in Shopify all along, so there's nothing to restore.
