Discountly documentation / Targeting and eligibility

Sale items, minimums and the shipping add-on

The three settings below the logic of every Discountly discount, compared across the six types. How items already on sale are handled (don't apply, compare-at price, stack), minimum purchase amounts and quantities and which items count, and the shipping add-on with its own minimum, with examples and the mistakes to avoid.

Below the logic blocks, every Discountly discount has the same three settings: Items already on sale, Also include a shipping discount with this rule, and Minimum purchase requirements. They belong to the whole discount, not to one logic block, and they work a little differently for each type.

This page puts them side by side. Each type's own page has an example: Product discount, Volume pricing, Order, Shipping, Buy X get Y, Free gift.

Which types have which setting

Type Items already on sale Shipping add-on Minimum purchase requirements
Volume pricing Yes Yes Yes
Product discount Yes Yes Yes
Order discount Shown, but no effect Yes Yes
Buy X get Y Yes, for the items that earn the reward Yes Yes
Free gift No Yes No: the gift's Minimum order subtotal takes its place
Shipping discount No No: the shipping settings are the offer Yes

Items already on sale

An item is on sale when its compare-at price is higher than its price. An item whose compare-at price equals its price isn't on sale.

Option What it does 30% off a $150 jacket on sale for $120
Don't apply "Skip items already discounted." No discount. The customer pays $120
Use compare-at price "Discount is calculated from the original (compare-at) price." 30% off $150. The customer pays $105
Stack on sale price (default) "Apply the discount on top of the current sale price." 30% off $120. The customer pays $84

How each type reads it:

  • Volume pricing: with Don't apply, sale items get no tier discount and don't count toward the tier quantity either, mix & match included. The volume pricing table and available offers don't show the discount on a sale variant.
  • Product discount: as in the table.
  • Buy X get Y: with Don't apply, items on sale don't earn the reward. The reward itself is always free, even if it's on sale.
  • Order discount: the setting is listed but doesn't change anything. The discount comes off the subtotal at the prices the customer pays, sale prices included.

Use compare-at price only changes percentage discounts. A $ off discount takes the same amount off either way. And it never raises a price: if 30% off the original is less than the sale already gives, for example on an item at half price, the customer pays the sale price.

Minimum purchase requirements

Option The discount applies when What counts
No minimum requirements (default) The cart has an item the logic matches
Minimum purchase amount ($) The cart subtotal reaches the amount The whole cart
Minimum quantity of items The cart has at least this many matching items Only items that match a live logic block. "Counts only items that match this rule's product selection."

Points that catch people out:

  • The amount is the whole cart. "$10 off candles over $50" with Minimum purchase amount 50 applies to a $10 candle in a $50 cart of anything. To require $50 of candles, use a free gift or a shipping discount, whose minimums can be limited to products, or a Minimum quantity of items instead.
  • Quantities pool across blocks. With two logic blocks (hoodies and T-shirts) and a minimum quantity of 3, two hoodies and a T-shirt qualify. Paused blocks don't count.
  • Free items never count. Gifts and rewards Discountly added to the cart don't count toward a minimum quantity. For "buy 10 get 2 free", the customer has to buy 10.
  • One minimum per discount. For spend tiers ("$10 off over $100, $25 off over $200"), create one discount per tier. See Order discounts.
  • Volume tiers are already a minimum. A volume discount rarely needs a minimum quantity too.

The shipping add-on

Tick Also include a shipping discount with this rule to give a shipping discount with the main one: "15% off for members, and free shipping". It's on every type except Shipping discount, and on every plan.

Field What it does
Shipping discount type Free (default), Percent off or Amount off
Percent off shipping / Amount off shipping The value, for the last two
Minimum order subtotal for shipping discount Optional. A subtotal for the shipping part only. "When this rule targets a collection or product set, only those products count toward the minimum."

The shipping part applies when all of these are true:

  1. The cart has at least one item a live logic block matches.
  2. The customer meets the discount's Eligibility.
  3. The cart meets the discount's Minimum purchase requirements (for a free gift, its minimum order subtotal).
  4. The cart reaches Minimum order subtotal for shipping discount, if set. If any logic block uses All products, the whole cart counts.

At checkout it shows as Free shipping, % off shipping or Amount off shipping.

Add-on or a separate shipping discount

Use the add-on when shipping has exactly the same conditions as the main discount. Use a separate shipping discount when it needs its own minimum, customers or schedule, or should keep running when the main discount ends. Either way, check Combining discounts: the add-on is a shipping discount, so it follows the Shipping discounts checkbox of the discounts it meets.

Examples

"Members get 15% off and free shipping over $50." A product discount, 15% off, Eligibility Customers with tags member, add-on Free with Minimum order subtotal for shipping discount 50.

"Buy 4 or more mugs for 20% off and ship free." A volume discount with one tier, 4 at 20% off, add-on Free, and Minimum quantity of items 4 so one mug doesn't ship free.

"Free tote over $75, and free shipping too." A free gift with a $75 minimum order subtotal and the add-on Free. Both arrive at $75, since the add-on uses the gift's minimum.

"Staff pay 30% off the original price, sale or not." A product discount with Items already on sale set to Use compare-at price. See Product discounts.

Troubleshooting

A sale item got no discount. Items already on sale is Don't apply. On a volume discount, those items don't count toward the tier either.

A sale item got more off than expected. Stack on sale price (the default) takes the discount off the sale price, on top of the sale. Choose Use compare-at price to measure it from the original price instead.

The discount applied below the minimum amount. Minimum purchase amount counts the whole cart, not only the matching items. See Minimum purchase requirements.

Shipping is free before the offer applies. See the warning under The shipping add-on.
