Discountly documentation / Targeting and eligibility
Customer eligibility
Limit a Discountly discount to some customers. All customers, logged-in customers, customers with tags (any or all), specific customers and customer segments, who checks each one, what shoppers see on product pages and in the cart, and how eligibility works on draft orders.
Eligibility decides who can use a discount: everyone, or only some customers, such as staff, wholesale buyers or members. It's on every plan and every discount type.
Targeting decides which products a discount applies to; eligibility decides which customers. A staff discount usually needs both: All products, for Customers with tags staff.
The choices
Eligibility is below Minimum purchase requirements on the discount page. Pick one:
| Eligibility | Who qualifies | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| All customers (default) | Everyone, guests included | |
| Logged-in customers | "Any customer signed in to their account qualifies. Guests don't." | |
| Customers with tags | Signed-in customers whose account has the tags you enter | 25 tags |
| Specific customers | The customers you pick | 100 customers |
| Customer segments | Customers in the Shopify segments you pick | 100 segments |
Every choice except All customers needs the customer to be signed in, since Discountly can only tell who a guest is once they sign in. Switching to another choice clears what you entered for the previous one.
The Discounts list shows each discount's eligibility under its title, such as Logged-in customers or Any of tags: staff, wholesale.
Customers with tags
Type a tag in Tags and press Enter, or separate several with commas: "Only customers with these Shopify tags qualify." Then choose, in Customers qualify when they have:
- Any of these tags: a customer tagged
wholesaleorvipqualifies. - All of these tags: only customers tagged both qualify.
Tags match the tags on the customer's account in Shopify (Customers, then the customer, then Tags). Tag customers by hand, in bulk from the customer list, or with Shopify Flow. A customer qualifies as soon as the tag is on their account and they're signed in.
Employee and VIP pricing with customer tags compares tags with Shopify's own customer segments.
Specific customers and customer segments
Search by name or email ("Name or email"), or by segment name ("Segment name"), and click a result to add it. Remove one with the x on its chip.
Shopify itself enforces these two: "Shopify applies this discount only for these customers at checkout." Segments are the ones you create in Shopify under Customers → Segments, so a customer who joins a segment later qualifies without editing the discount.
Who checks what
Shopify checks two choices before Discountly's discount runs at all; Discountly checks the other two at checkout:
| Eligibility | Checked by |
|---|---|
| Specific customers, Customer segments | Shopify, natively: the discount isn't offered to anyone else |
| Logged-in customers, Customers with tags | Discountly's discount Function, which Shopify runs at checkout |
Either way, the check happens at checkout, every time, so a customer can't get an ineligible discount by sharing a link or a code.
On the product page and in the cart
Discountly's storefront pieces follow eligibility too:
- Product page blocks (Volume pricing table, Available offers, Mix & match) show a discount only to shoppers who qualify. With a staff discount, signed-in staff see it and nobody else does.
- Segment-only discounts don't appear on product pages: "Product-page promos for segment-only rules aren't shown, since membership can't be checked there." They still apply in the cart and at checkout.
- Free gifts and Buy X get Y rewards are only added to the cart for shoppers who qualify. A guest doesn't get a members-only gift; once they sign in, it's added the next time the cart changes. See Cart embed.
On draft orders
Discountly's draft order tools (Pro plan) check eligibility against the customer on the draft order. Until a customer is selected, only discounts for All customers can apply. The Discountly card says so: "No discounts available yet. Some discounts are only for customers. Select a customer on this order to check again."
Examples
| Discount | Eligibility |
|---|---|
| Staff pricing, 30% off everything | Customers with tags: staff |
| Wholesale tiers for two kinds of trade account | Customers with tags, Any of these tags: wholesale, trade |
| Free shipping for account holders | Logged-in customers |
| A thank-you discount for ten named customers | Specific customers |
| 10% off for customers who spent over $500 last year | Customer segments, with a segment built on amount spent |
Troubleshooting
A customer who should qualify doesn't get the discount. Check they're signed in. For tags, check the tag on their account matches, and whether the discount needs All of these tags. Check the discount is live and inside its schedule.
A guest got the discount. Check the discount's eligibility isn't All customers. A second discount, from Discountly or Shopify, may also apply to the same items.
A segment discount doesn't show on the product page. That's expected: product pages can't check segment membership. Use Customers with tags if the offer needs to show before the cart.
A customer was removed from Specific customers. When a customer asks Shopify to erase their data, Discountly removes them from Specific customers lists.
