Product discounts

Take a percentage or a fixed amount off matching products with Discountly. A worked example of staff pricing by customer tag, sale items and compare-at prices, minimum purchase requirements, a free shipping add-on and the display message.

A Product discount takes a percentage or an amount off every matching item in the cart: 30% off for staff, $5 off every candle, 15% off a brand for members. There are no tiers, and no order subtotal to reach unless you set one. It's the type behind employee, VIP and member pricing.

This page covers what's specific to product discounts. Creating a discount covers what every type shares.

Worked example: staff pricing

Staff get 30% off the original price of everything except gift cards, including items already on sale. Their customer accounts are tagged staff.

  1. On the Discounts page, click Create discount and choose Product discount.
  2. Title: "Staff pricing". Staff see it in the cart and at checkout. Leave the method on Automatic discount.
  3. Under Discount logic, click Add logic. In The offer, set Discount type to % off and Value to 30.
  4. In Who it applies to, keep All products, and under Exclude products where any of these match add Product type is any of "Gift Card".
  5. Click Save to close the logic block.
  6. Under Items already on sale, choose Use compare-at price, so staff pay 30% off the original price, not 30% off the sale price.
  7. Under Eligibility, choose Customers with tags and enter staff (see Customer eligibility).
  8. Under Combinations, untick the types staff pricing shouldn't stack with, such as Order discounts if you run sitewide order discounts.
  9. Click Save rule.

What a staff member pays:

Item Regular price Sale price Staff pays
Hoodie, not on sale $90.00 $63.00 (30% off $90)
Jacket, on sale $150.00 $120.00 $105.00 (30% off $150)
Gift card $50.00 $50.00 (excluded)

Customers without the tag, and guests, pay the normal price. Staff have to be signed in to their account, since the tag is on the account. Employee and VIP pricing with customer tags compares this with Shopify's own customer segments.

The offer

Field Choices
Discount type % off or $ off
Value The percentage or amount. More than 0

$ off comes off each item, not each line: $5 off with 3 candles in the cart is $15 off.

A discount can have several logic blocks, each with its own value and products: 30% off apparel and 10% off electronics in one "Staff pricing" discount. When two blocks match the same item, the larger discount wins.

Discountly never applies a product discount to a free gift or reward that another Discountly discount added to the cart. Those stay free.

Items already on sale

An item is on sale when it has a compare-at price higher than its price. For other types, see Sale items, minimums and the shipping add-on.

Option 30% off a $150 jacket on sale for $120
Don't apply No discount. The customer pays $120
Use compare-at price 30% off the $150 original. The customer pays $105
Stack on sale price (default) 30% off the $120 sale price. The customer pays $84

Use compare-at price only changes percentage discounts. A $ off discount takes the same amount off either way. If 30% off the original is less than the sale already gives (for example an item at half price), the customer keeps the sale price.

Minimum purchase requirements

By default the discount applies to any matching item. To require more first:

Option The discount applies when
No minimum requirements (default) Always
Minimum purchase amount ($) The cart subtotal reaches the amount. The whole cart counts
Minimum quantity of items The cart has at least this many matching items. Only items that match the logic count

Example: "$10 off every candle when you buy 3 or more candles" is a $ off of 10 on candles with Minimum quantity of items set to 3.

Free shipping add-on

Tick Also include a shipping discount with this rule to give a shipping discount along with the product discount, under the same conditions:

Field What it does
Shipping discount type Free (default), Percent off or Amount off
Percent off shipping / Amount off shipping The value, for the last two
Minimum order subtotal for shipping discount Optional. A subtotal the cart must reach for the shipping part only. When the discount targets specific products, only those count

The shipping discount applies when the cart has at least one matching item, the customer is eligible, and the minimums are met. At checkout it shows as Free shipping, % off shipping or Amount off shipping.

For "members get 15% off and free shipping over $50": a 15% product discount for Customers with tags member, with the add-on set to Free and a minimum order subtotal for shipping of 50.

Display message

Customers see a message on each discounted line in the cart and at checkout. By default it's the amount: 30% off or $5 off.

Tick Customize the display message to write your own Display message. {amount} becomes the discount, such as 30% or $5: "Staff price: {amount} off". The Preview shows the result.

On the product page

Shopify shows product discounts in the cart and at checkout, not on the product page. To show the offer before checkout, add the Available offers block and, in the discount's Advanced settings, tick Include in available offers section on the Product Page. Only shoppers who qualify see it: with the staff example, signed-in staff see "Staff pricing" on product pages and nobody else does.

Upsell hints (Pro plan) are available on product discounts that have a minimum purchase requirement or a shipping add-on, for example "Add 1 more candle to get $10 off each".

Troubleshooting

A tagged customer doesn't get the discount. They have to be signed in. Check the tag on their customer account matches exactly, and that the discount is live and inside its schedule.

A sale item got no discount, or too much. Check Items already on sale. See Items already on sale.

The discount doesn't combine with another one. Check Combinations in both discounts. A Shopify discount combines with another only when both allow it. See Combining discounts.

An item gets a different discount than expected. Another product or volume discount may include the same item. Click the eye icon on each logic block to see the products it matches, and keep overlapping discounts to a minimum.
