Aedify documentation / Build pages
Creating pages and blog posts
Create Shopify pages and blog posts in Aedify, choose or create a blog, set the author, title and visibility, open pages made in Shopify's editor, and finish SEO, excerpts, featured images, tags, templates and menus in Shopify.
Pages and blog posts you build in Aedify are ordinary Shopify pages and blog posts. Aedify creates them in your store, saves the layout into their content, and leaves everything else (web address, SEO, featured image, tags, menus) to Shopify, where you already manage them.
This page covers creating them, the Pages and Blog posts lists, opening pages made in Shopify's editor, and what to finish in Shopify.
Create a page
- In Aedify, click Create on the home page, then pick Page. Or go to Pages and click Create page.
- Enter a Title. It's the page's name in Shopify and on your storefront.
- Click Create and open builder.
The page is created hidden, so you can build it before it goes live, and the builder opens. If you leave the title empty, it's called Untitled.
Create a blog post
- Click Create on the home page and pick Blog post, or go to Blog posts and click Create blog post.
- Enter a Title.
- Pick a Blog. Your store's blogs are listed, plus New blog….
- New blog… shows New blog name. Leave it empty and the blog is called News.
- Enter an Author: the name shown on the post.
- Click Create and open builder.
Like pages, posts are created hidden.
If your store already has a blog called News, pick it from the list rather than creating a second one with the same name.
Build and publish
The builder has the same tools for pages and posts. Getting started walks through a first layout, and Using the builder covers every part.
At the top of the builder:
| Field | What it does |
|---|---|
| Title | The page or post's title. Saving changes it in Shopify |
| Visible on storefront | Ticked: live on your store. Unticked: hidden. Blog posts show their blog under it, as Blog: News |
Nothing goes to Shopify until you click Save. To publish:
- Tick Visible on storefront.
- Click Save.
Pages appear at /pages/ followed by their handle, and posts at /blogs/ followed by the blog's handle and the post's.
The Pages and Blog posts lists
Pages and Blog posts in Aedify's menu list every page or post in your store, not just the ones built in Aedify, newest change first, 25 at a time.
| Column | Shows |
|---|---|
| Title | Click it to open the page in the builder |
| Blog | The post's blog (Blog posts only) |
| Status | Visible or Hidden |
| Editor | Aedify for pages built in Aedify; Shopify for the rest |
| Updated | When it was last changed, in Aedify or Shopify |
Search by title, or filter Visibility to Visible or Hidden.
The home page also shows Recently edited: your 8 most recent Aedify pages, posts and templates.
Open a page made in Shopify
You can open any page or post in Aedify, including ones written in Shopify's editor. Aedify reads the content and shows This content was created outside Aedify:
- By default, Aedify turns headings, text, images, YouTube and Vimeo videos, dividers and
<details>accordions into Aedify elements, all in one full-width row. Anything else, such as tables, forms or styled HTML, becomes an HTML code element. - Keep as one HTML block leaves the content exactly as it was, in one HTML code element. Convert to elements switches back.
Nothing changes in Shopify until you click Save. Once you save, the page is an Aedify page and shows Aedify in the Editor column.
Edit in one place
After you save a page in Aedify, keep editing it in Aedify. Its content is now Aedify's layout, so in Shopify's own editor it looks like HTML with Aedify's markup.
If someone does change it in Shopify, Aedify notices the next time the page opens and shows This content was changed in Shopify since Aedify last saved it. Their changes are loaded into the builder; check them before you save. Anything Aedify can't read as an element is kept as HTML code, not lost.
If two people have the same page open in Aedify, the second to save sees …was saved somewhere else since you opened it. Reload to get the latest version.
Finish in Shopify
Aedify edits the title, visibility and content. Everything else stays in Shopify's editor (Online Store → Pages, or Content → Blog posts):
| Setting | Pages | Blog posts | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| Search engine listing: page title, meta description, URL handle | Yes | Yes | Bottom of the editor |
| Theme template, to use an alternate template | Yes | Yes | Online store card |
| Publish on a set date and time | Yes | Yes | Visibility |
| Excerpt and Image shown on the blog's list page | Yes | Side cards | |
| Tags and Author | Yes | Side cards |
Shopify's guides: Pages, Working with blog posts, Templates.
If you pick an alternate Theme template, make sure it has the Aedify content block when the page uses live elements. See Alternate templates.
To add a page to your store's menu, add a link to it under Online Store → Navigation, as you would any page.
Deleting
Aedify doesn't delete pages or posts. Delete them in Shopify, from Online Store → Pages or Content → Blog posts. Shopify notes that deleting a page also deletes any menu item that links to it (Pages).
Next steps
- Rows and columns: lay out the page.
- Templates: reuse a set of rows across pages.
- Accessibility check: check the page before you publish.
